My journey to financial planning
Chris McGlinn is the Director and Principal Adviser of Withani Consulting and Advisory Pty Ltd.
I became a financial planner in 2005 after a successful career with BHP where I worked first in industrial relations (steel, maritime and stevedoring) then operations, running a small business in New Zealand then a larger transport operation in Australia and finally being the head of strategy for BHP Transport and Logistics. I left BHP, took a couple of years away from paid employment to do some further study, then started working as a consultant advising small businesses. I got into financial planning through a conversation with my then accountant which roughly corresponded with the death of a close relative who at 39 died with no super, no insurance, a large mortgage against an unfinished owner built house and a wife and six children aged from between 4 and 17 – I thought I could use my skills to make a decent living and help people. I still ascribe to this.
Certainly, I have formal qualifications in economics and business as well as financial planning; I also have professional accreditation from recognised industry professional associations like the Financial Planning and Self Managed Superannuation Fund Associations. If you are interested in these click here. I also undertake regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD) - I am happy to discuss or provided details of this if required.
Fundamentally, what I do is provide advice* that is personal, practical and tailored to deliver real long-term benefits. I believe that the value of an individual's ability to earn an income is often not recognised, and for privately held business owners and their families, the business is usually the primary investment. I am passionate about protecting the families of privately held business owners, their partners, employees, and customers, from the ravaging fallout caused by the premature death or disability of one of the owners. Likewise I believe improving the value of a privately held business is one of the best ways for people in this situation to grow wealth and invest.
* I do this as an Authorised Representative of Nextplan Financial Pty Ltd who hold an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL 452996).
